City of Rossland acquires Iron Horse Parkland
Rossland, BC – The City is pleased to announce the successful acquisition of the Iron Horse Parkland property, securing approximately 18 acres of cherished green space adjacent to residential properties on McLeod Avenue. This purchase supports the City’s commitment to conserving natural areas in alignment with the Official Community Plan’s policy to support the development of the Rossland Forest Park by purchasing appropriate lands around Rossland to conserve the area for wildlife and for residents and visitors to enjoy for recreation, in perpetuity.
The Iron Horse Parkland property is a vital natural area, featuring the popular KC Trail and housing essential City infrastructure, including a water storage tank and distribution main on Monte Christo Mountain. This acquisition will enable the City to ensure the property remains a public parkland asset, as it has agreed to a covenant restricting the land to parkland use in perpetuity. Additionally, the acquisition provides continued City access for necessary infrastructure maintenance and upgrades.
Mayor Morel extended gratitude to the property owners, stating, “We are incredibly grateful to Iron Horse Park Ltd. for initiating this opportunity and working collaboratively with the City to secure the future of this valuable community space. Their vision to preserve this area as a lasting asset for the public aligns closely with our goals, and we appreciate their commitment to making this acquisition possible.”
Key benefits of the acquisition include:
- Permanent Parkland Status: With the covenant, the Iron Horse Parkland will remain accessible for public enjoyment, fulfilling the City’s goal of maintaining green spaces for recreational use while supporting conservation efforts for local wildlife habitats.
- Enhanced Infrastructure Security: Ownership ensures uninterrupted City access to the infrastructure currently located on the property, which is essential for maintaining quality water services to the City.
- Wildfire Mitigation Opportunities: The purchase supports future wildfire risk reduction initiatives, such as the FireSmart Program, allowing the City to implement measures to protect nearby homes and natural areas.
- Environmental and Recreational Impact: By keeping this space designated as parkland, the City minimizes environmental risks and promotes recreational activities that align with the community’s vision for sustainable development.
The City is excited to implement a policy in its Official Community Plan through this acquisition and looks forward to maintaining and enhancing the Rossland Forest Park as part of a larger effort to conserve Rossland’s natural environment for both wildlife and community use, now and for future generations.
