WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU TESTED YOUR HOME FOR RADON?  CITY OF ROSSLAND OFFERS FREE TEST KITS TO RESIDENTS

October 17, 2024

The City of Rossland is taking action to protect residents from lung cancer this fall by participating in the 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge.

Residents of Rossland, are invited to protect their health by testing their homes for radon this winter with the 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge. This free program includes a Radon Information Session that covers the health effects of radon, why it’s a concern in the area, and what Health Canada recommends for homeowners. Free test kits will be available to 100 households, with details provided during the information session.

Too few Canadians are aware that the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers can be found right in their own homes. Radon gas is a concern across Canada, but only a radon test will indicate whether the levels in your home are a health concern to you and your family. “Radon is a well-established human carcinogen and testing and reducing radon levels is an important method of lung cancer prevention.” says Dr. Anne-Marie Nicol, a researcher from the Faculty of Sciences from Simon Fraser University, “Residential radon is marked as Canadians’ primary exposure to radon; preventing radon exposure will reduce the number of Canadians dying of lung cancer.”

For residents of Rossland, now is the perfect time to Take Action on Radon. Residents are encouraged to sign up for the program at https://rossland.ca/radon-test-kit/

Residents are advised to join the waitlist in the likely event that more kits are available.

Participants will be sent a link to a free Radon Information Session which will be held online on Thursday, November 14, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. on zoom. This Radon Information Session will provide participants with basic information about radon, its health effects and how to reduce levels if they are high. It will also explain the basics of the 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge.

Participants must be able to pick up their radon test Friday, November 15 until Friday, November 22 at Rossland City Hall, 1920 Third Ave., Mon- Fri 9am-4pm and return it in March between 3-7th. These tests are time sensitive.

Funding for this project is provided by Health Canada.
